I did not get as much reading done as I’d hoped this weekend (though I did visit two books stores and add to my TBR pile…).

The Motion of Puppets

Nearly finished with this one. It’s lovely and creepy and delightful. If you liked Moulin Rouge! / La Boheme, you are going to want to check this out.

Patient H.M.

A fascinating nonfiction about a man suffering from epilepsy who underwent a lobotomy. The book is written by the grandson of the doctor who treated him, which adds another dimension entirely.

How the Post Office Created America

I really like the concept of this one but the writing style is a bit too didactic. Instead of letting the facts speak for themselves, the author tends to jump up and down on them a bit.

  1. Yeah, I’ve only just started but it’s truly bizarre. And although I am interested in just the science (brain function, in this case), I’m also intrigued by the medical ethics side of it as well. It’s very different.

  2. I read the New York Times article about Patient HM and it sounded thoroughly fascinating. The woman who’s the guy’s main doctor sounds — something. Unethical for sure, and it makes me nervous that she plans to destroy all these documents relating to his case. (Or maybe already has? I can’t remember which it was, I was too speechless with horror.)

  3. I tried Patient H.M. but got bored with the deep dive into the history of the lobotomy and was frustrated by how little HM had actually appeared in the book by the 30% mark, so ended up DNFing. Glad it worked for you!
