It's Monday - What are you reading?
I’ve been jumping around a bit this week. Trying to find the book that will stick with me, that I can’t ignore. And I’m trying to infuse my reading with Halloween-ish titles. It’s my favorite holiday so I basically celebrate for the six weeks leading up to it. Nearly finished with The Secrets of Wishtide,…Read More »
REVIEW: PATIENT H.M.
The human brain is endlessly fascinating. I am always interested in stories of insanity or strange mental abnormalities. There is still so much we don’t know or understand about how our mind, or the organ that contains it, works. Henry Molaison was born in 1926. By the time he was a young man, he…Read More »
It's Monday - What Are You Reading?
I have nearly finished Patient H.M. and it has been a fascinating read. I find Dittrich has found the right balance between technical information and human emotion. I had the good fortune to attend part of SIBA in Savannah this weekend as a proxy for The Book Lady, a local store I blog for and generally trade…Read More »
Top Ten Tuesday: All Time Favorites
Well this is just mean. Choose your top ten favorite books of all time. Somehow. Working under the assumption that this is basically impossible, I am going to choose ten that are amazing and are way up there, but are in no particular order and is not meant to be definitive. These are books that…Read More »
It's Monday: What Are You Reading?
I did not get as much reading done as I’d hoped this weekend (though I did visit two books stores and add to my TBR pile…). The Motion of Puppets Nearly finished with this one. It’s lovely and creepy and delightful. If you liked Moulin Rouge! / La Boheme, you are going to want to…Read More »
The Friday 56: The Motion of Puppets
Just started reading this modern fable. It’s vivid and unsettling and strangely realistic. A puff of dust rose from her canvas fingers. The crowd cheered for her, and then she felt the push of her left foot as she took her first step. Working together, the puppets moved her arms and legs, and she was…Read More »
REVIEW: A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW
The literary community has been waiting for a follow-up to the Towles’ debut bestseller Rules of Civility. Dare I say, his second outing is even better. Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov finds himself in an awkward time to be aristocracy. The Bolshevik revolution has dismantled the Russian monarchy and finds anything from the old culture dangerous and…Read More »
Books for September
It’s still hitting the 90s in Savannah, so no fall leaves or crisp days for me yet. But I can hope. Here are some titles for your September lists. ABOUT THE WOLF ROAD ELKA BARELY REMEMBERS a time before she knew Trapper. She was just seven years old, wandering lost and hungry in the wilderness,…Read More »
Gorgeous, dreamy book illustrations
Slightly surreal and definitely ethereal, illustrator Jungho Lee has created these beautiful illustrations that remind us books are always with us. View more.Read More »
REVIEW: THE MIDNIGHT ASSASSIN
On New Year's Eve 1884, a killer began a year-long reign of terror over the citizens of Austin. Before he (or she) was finished, there would be seven dead and several more wounded and disfigured. Then just as suddenly, the murders stopped.Read More »
The Friday 56 - All for Nothing
The Friday 56 challenges readers to share what they are reading by choosing a few sentences on page 56 of their current book. She took letters out of the desk and put them in the case as well, and photographs too. Then she closed the suitcase and pushed it back under the bed. She sat…Read More »
REVIEW: THE GENTLEMAN by Forrest Leo
This madcap Victorian adventure is hysterical from beginning to end. Third rate poet Lionel Savage has been unhappy since getting married. Though he fell hard for his beautiful and vivacious wife, marital life just doesn't seem to be working for them. She has become aloof and he can no longer find inspiration. This book is both snort-out-loud funny and tickle-your-brain funny. Plus, it's an entertaining adventure.Read More »

It's Monday - August 8
So, we’ve had to move out of our house for a couple of weeks while some work is done. It’s been fairly stressful, to say the least, and my reading has been sporadic. We are so lucky to have wonderful friends who are letting us (and a dog and cat) stay with them and we…Read More »
Library Checkout: July 2016
Getting in on this bandwagon begin driven by Shannon. For absolutely no reason, I had a dry spell with the local library. This past month or so I have been using it again, primarily to investigate titles on my TBR list without buying something that I end up not liking. And, I had to be…Read More »
