Dining With the Authors: Every year at Book Expo, children and adult authors are featured during breakfast. Who would you dream of enjoying a meal with? Would it be breakfast, lunch, dinner, or simply coffee? What would your meal be? What would you discuss?
I want to have a bit of a Mad Tea Party with PG Wodehouse.
The man was so very funny and whimsical. I would ask him to give me a Wodehousian name, like his characters Gussie Finknottle or Honoria Glossop. I would also ask him about Jeeves, the always slightly unknowable gentleman’s gentleman.
There would be cinnamon crumpets, cucumber sandwiches, fruit, chocolate cake, black tea, milk and honey. I would also ask for a drive in his delightful convertible.
Some of my favorite quotes.
I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.
He had just about enough intelligence to open his mouth when he wanted to eat, but certainly no more.
I’m not absolutely certain of the facts, but I rather fancy it’s Shakespeare who says that it’s always just when a fellow is feeling particularly braced with things in general that Fate sneaks up behind him with the bit of lead piping.
She looked as if she had been poured into her clothes and had forgotten to say “when”.
If you haven’t read a PG Wodehouse book, I suggest you do so immediately. Start with The Inimitable Jeeves. I reread them all the time, often when I can’t sleep. They are amusing and comforting all at once.
I imagine an afternoon tea with him would be utterly insane and charming.
