November 5th marks the anniversary of the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. A number of discontents planned to blow up Parliament but were caught before they could light the fuse. Guy Fawkes was found in the underground chambers below the building with dozens of barrels of gunpowder. He was tried and convicted of treason, though most historians agree that he was only one of many conspirators. Britons still celebrate the holiday as Bonfire Night with fireworks, festivities and, of course, bonfires.

And what has this to do with writing? This is a call to all the NaNoWriMos out there to add some gunpowder to their plot. You can start with a handful and see how it sizzles. Light a long fuse for a slow burn. Or go for a massive explosion from 36 barrels full of plot powder. Toss in some nasty conspirators who will undermine your characters and see what they can get away with. Be radical with your ideas. Blow up your word count.

It is the 5th of November.
